Vía ferrata | La Hermida

I did this via ferrata twice last week; the first time by the longer, higher route and the second time by the intermediate "bridges" route. On the longer route there is limited way-marking once the end of the cable is reached and I ended up resorting to mountain-sense and scrambling to the top by whichever line looked the best. Beyond the cable much of the scrambling was scrappy and I may have been off route; but it was enjoyable nonetheless. The route down was difficult to find and I had to scout around to find the best and safest way off. Fortunately the track became more distinct as the journey down progressed. I was surprised that the way-marking was so poor on such a popular route, and an inexperienced team could get into difficulty especially in poor visibility.
Route finding was not a problem on the lower route and the bridges were exhilarating. On the second, longer bridge we wondered why some people were clipping their kit onto the handrails instead of the overhead safety cable. We found out near the end. The distance between the safety cable and the footbridge is greater than at the start, creating a lot of tension and it's an effort to drag the carabiners along the wire. In hindsight we needed to loosen our kit before venturing onto the bridge as it's awkward to do that once established on the bridge. However it was a great adventure and very much to be recommended.
